Suchandra X Vaaniya has made a distinct mark in the Bengal film industry as an actress, director, and producer. Her company, Vaaniya Group of Companies, produces films under its banner. As an actress, she has worked in numerous Bengali films, web series, and short films, including Diet (Hotstar), Path Jadi Na Sesh Hoy (Klikk), Balukabela.com (Zee5), Bonku Babu (Zee5), Jamai Boron, Not a Dirty Film (Klikk), Chotushkone (Prime Video), Conditions Apply (Prime Video), Kolkatay Columbus (Sony Liv), Nilachaley Kiriti, Suryo Prithibir Charidike Ghore, and Purob Poshchim Dokkhin Uttar Ashbei.
In direction, her first notable work was the creative direction of Purob Poshchim Dokkhin Uttar Ashbei, a high-budget Bengali spiritual thriller that succeeded at the box office. She later directed Surpanakha Agomon (The Arrival of Shurpanakha), a 17-minute short film selected for the Kolkata International Film Festival in 2022, winning over 10 awards in various categories. The film portrays the dialogue and emotions between Sita and Shurpanakha, shot in Purulia and Bankura districts, featuring Chhau artists, tribal performers, and newcomers.
Suchandra studied direction at the New York Film Academy and honed her skills at the Sujit Roy Institute. Currently, she is working on Bengali projects and two Hindi films, one of which, The Garruda, is a message-driven story blending mystery, thrill, ancient history, folklore, and mythology, with shooting set to begin in October.
Hailing from South Kolkata, Suchandra grew up in an environment immersed in art and filmmaking. Her father’s passion for photography and frequent discussions about films and scripts shaped her early interest. During her 12th grade, she acted in a short film, which led to her discovery by a director and marked the start of her film career. Though she initially aspired to be an actress, her passion for direction and production always lingered.
Today, Suchandra X Vaaniya has been honored with multiple awards as an actress and director. She is also actively involved in social work, helping the underprivileged. She believes films should blend entertainment with culture, history, and tradition to provide audiences with meaningful insights.
Suchandra values action over words, stating that her journey has just begun, and she aims to reach her destination with pride and on her own terms. Currently, she is busy with her upcoming projects.
